What is Anemia?
There is hardly any person who doesn’t know "What is Anemia". It is one of the most common types of Medical Problems in the world. People of the developing countries are affected most, as they are not concern about it. Around 30% of the total world population is anemic and half of these, some 600 million people, have iron deficiency anemia. Technically, Anemia is not a disease but a symptom of any number of disorders. But, What is Anemia? Common people defined Anemia differently. They say, “My blood is decreased.” It is not the actual thing. At first, you need to know about a few terms to understand it.
Our blood is composed of Blood plasma and Formed/cellular elements. Blood plasma makes 55% and Formed/cellular elements make 45% of total blood volume. Formed/cellular elements are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. RBCs are also known as red blood corpuscles or erythrocytes which contain hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that is the main part of red blood cells and binds oxygen. It is composed of globin and heme that gives red blood cells their characteristic color. Hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues.
When you have anemia, it means, your hemoglobin level in the blood is decreased. It may be due to the change in the plasma volume. In this condition cells in your body will not get enough oxygen, as oxygen cannot be delivered to different tissues of the body properly.
