Pink eye or Conjunctivitis

Pink eye or Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and membranes on the inner part of the eyelids.

Why it occurs?
  • The most common Causes are viruses and common virus for this condition is Adenoviruses.
  • Irritants e.g. dirt, smoke, shampoos and pool chlorine etc.
  • Allergies e.g. pollen, dust etc.
  • Bacteria- Staphylococci and Streptococci are common.
  • Fungi
  • Certain diseases rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, Kawasaki's disease, inflammatory bowel diseases e.g. ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
  • Chlamydia
  • Use of contact lenses
  • Parasites (rarely)

What are the Symptoms of Pink eye or Conjunctivitis?

Common:

Redness, itchiness, a gritty feeling, swelling of the tissues around eye.

Others:
In bacterial Con:
  • Eye pain
  • A moderate to a large amount of discharge (usual appearance thick and yellow or greenish in color) or, crusting of the eyelashes in the morning
  • Swelling
In viral Con:
  • Watery discharge occasionally with crusting
  • A sore throat and runny nose with some viruses
  • Sometimes painful to look at bright lights
In allergic Con:
  • Watery and burning eyes
  • Sneezing, runny and itchy nose or scratchy throat
In irritants/chemical Con:
  • Burning and watery eyes
  • A sensation of having something in the eye
