Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lungs. There are two main types:
  1. Non-small cell lung cancer- It is the most common type. It includes squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
  2. Small cell lung cancer.
When the cancer is made up of both types, it is called mixed small cell/large cell cancer.
When cancer begins other parts of the body and spread to the lungs, it is called metastatic cancer to the lung.

Why it occurs?

The most important cause is Cigarếtte smӦking. The earlier you started smoking and the more you smoke per day, the more chance of having it. It can also occur in people who have never smoked. Secondhand smoke or, breathing the smoke of others increases the risk of lung cancer.
It also occurs without these reasons. In these cases, the cause is unknown.


What are the Lung Cancer Symptoms?

In the early stages typically lung cancer may not cause any symptoms. Gradually symptoms appear. They are-
  • A cough that doesn't go away or, changes in a chronic cough or smoker's cough
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent chest pain or intermittent, sharp chest pain
  • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Recurring bronchitis
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hoarseness
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent low fever
  • A headache

In the late stages:
  • Weakness
  • Pain and weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Bone and joint pain or tenderness
  • Hoarseness or changing voice
  • Swallowing Difficulty
  • Eyelid drooping
  • Swelling of the face or arms
  • Facial paralysis
  • Nail problems

What can happen if it left untreated?

Following Complications may occur-
  • Coughing up blood/ hemoptysis can become severe
  • Pleural effusion/ fluid in the chest
  • Metastasis- Cancer can spread to other parts of the body
  • Death
