Sinusitis may be defined as inflammation of the lining membrane the sinuses.
Why it occurs?
Sinusitis is most often caused by viral infection. In this condition, the mucous membrane lining inside of the nose and the sinuses are inflamed and the mucous membrane swells. Thus, the drainage of fluid from the sinuses into the nose and throat is blocked. Bacterial infection in the sinuses also Causes it. It results from an upper respiratory tract infection. Fungal infections may also cause it in people with impaired immune systems.
Some Medical Problems can increase the risk, such as-
- Common Colds
- Allergies
- Nasal polyps or tumors
- Enlarged or infected adenoids in children
- Cystic fibrosis
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Immune system disorders
- Structural problems in the nose
- Tooth Infection (rare)
What are the Symptoms?
- Loss of smell or Bad Breath
- A cough that often is worse at night
- Nasal congestion causing trouble breathing through nose and discharge (a thick, yellow or greenish) from the nose or down the back of the throat
- A sore Throat
- Fever
- Fatigue
- A headache or pain, tenderness, pressure and swelling around eyes, nose, cheeks or forehead
- A toothache and upper jaw aching
What can happen if it left untreated?
If it is not treated, chronic sinusitis may occur.
Serious Complications do not occur commonly. But, complications may include-
- Abscess
- Meningitis
- Osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Asthma flare-ups
- Orbital cellulitis (infection around the eye)
- Ear Infection
