Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness and frequent daytime sleep attacks. It is a chronic disease of the central nervous system.



Why it occurs?

The exact cause is unknown. But, maybe Causes are-
  • Genetics
  • Hypocretin/ reduced amounts of a protein
  • Stress
  • Infection
  • Exposure to toxins

What are the Symptoms?
  • Falling asleep suddenly and uncontrollably (last for 15 min to 5 hours)
  • Periods of extreme drowsiness during the day
  • Sudden loss of muscle control
  • Sleep paralysis
  • Dream-like hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up
  • Fatigue

What can happen if it left untreated?

Following Complications may occur-
  • Increased risk of a car accident, while driving/walking on the road
  • The difficulty with social activities
  • Public misunderstanding of the condition
  • Difficulty functioning at work
