What is Cretinism?

It is severe hypothyroidism during fetal life, infancy or childhood.


Who are Cretins?

Cretins are those infants or children who have severe hypothyroidism.


What are Cretinism Causes?

  1. Lack of thyroid gland congenitally.
  2. Maternal iodine deficiency.
  3. Inborn errors of thyroid hormone synthesis.
  4. Maternal anti-thyroid antibodies which cross the placenta.
  5. Fetal hypo-pituitary hypothyroidism.
  6. Lack of iodine in the diet.

What are Cretinism Signs and Symptoms?

  1. Stunted growth.
  2. A delayed milestone of development.
  3. Pot-bellied abdomen.
  4. Enlarged and protruding tongue with dribbling of saliva
  5. Skeletal growth is more interrupted than soft tissue growth.
  6. Protruding umbilicus.
  7. IQ- below normal.
  8. Severe mental retardation.
  9. Skin is rough, dry, wrinkled and scanty.


What is Myxedema?

It is severe hypothyroidism in adulŧ.


What are Myxedema Causes?

  1. Primary goitrous Hypothyroidism-
  • Chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.
  • Sub-acute thyroiditis.
  • Endemic iodine deficiency. 
  1. Primary non-goitrous hypothyroidism-
  • Radioactive iodine therapy
  • Spontaneous thyroid atrophy (atrophic myxedema)
  • External radiation
  • Surgical ablation
  1. Secondary Hypothyroidism-
  • Pituitary disease
  1. Peripheral resistance to thyroid hormones.

What are Myxedema Signs and Symptoms?
  • Face- Puffy, nonpitting edematous swelling and bagginess under the eyes.
  • Skin- Cool, dry, yellowish and doughy.
  • Hair- Sparse and coarse.
  • Voice- Frog like husky.
  • Unexplained weight gain.
  • Cold intolerance, lethargy.
  • Mental sluggishness.
  • Slowed heart rate.
  • Enlarged heart.
  • Fatigue and drowsiness, loss of appetite.
  • Extreme muscular sluggishness.
